b'86Ex 3863861902 - 1913 A CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN CHARLES BROWNLOWAND ALEC DOOKIE McKENZIE OF GEELONGA remarkable archive of 43 original letters, 2 cards and 10 notices sent by Charles Brownlow,in his capacity of Secretary of the Geelong Cricket & Football Club, to Alec Dookie McKenzie. Recruited from Warrnambool, Dookie McKenzie (not to be confused with the Essendon champion of the same nickname) was a powerful and prominent performer for Geelong in a variety of positions during the first decade of the 20th century. Equally at home on the half back line, as a follower, or as a forward, he played a total of 87 VFL games between 1902 and 1908. His main strengths were his tremendous pace and his superb aerial ability. Always signing his letters Brownie, Charles Brownlow was clearly more than an administrator. This unique collection of letters gives tremendous insight into the personal qualities of the manhis mentoring, medical and mental advice, encouragement and support - are evident in many places and provide an obvious explanation to later generations as to the reason the Victorian Football codes best-and-fairest award, the Brownlow Medal, was named in his honour.The archive comprises of the following items:31 original letters accompanied by the original envelopes12 original letters (without envelopes, but dated)2 hand-written postal cards10 printed or partly printed invitations, notices, reports and a telegram.There is also a range of sports related pictorial postcards sent to Mckenzie by another correspondent.Provenance: The Mckenzie family, by descent.Charles Brownlow (1861 - 1924) played football with the Geelong in the Victorian Football Association, before the formation of the VFL, beginning his career in 1880 and playing regularly until 1884, with occasional games thereafter. He captained the club in 1883, leading it to a premiership in that season. Following his playing career, Brownlow spent many years as an administrator. He was the Geelong Football Club secretary from 1885 to 1923, a year before his death. He served as Geelongs delegate on the Victorian Football League board from 1902 until 1922, and in that capacity as the VFLs vice-president and delegate to the Australasian Football Council from 1911 until 1916, and as chairman of the permit and umpires committee from 1911 until 1922. In addition to this, he was caretaker president of the VFL in 1918 and 1919.
