b'52The Nathan Buckley CollectionBrisbane Bears 1993By the end of his extraordinary 1992 season with Port Adelaide, Nathan Buckley was the hottest footballer in Australia outside the AFL. Everyone knew he was AFL-ready: the only question was where he would land. The answer to that question ended up being the Brisbane Bears (as they then were). But it was a strange pairing in some ways. Bucks was AFL-bound to Brisbane but, through a convoluted and at times secretive process, his management negotiated a deal which would see Bucks spend 1993 with the Bears, then in all likelihood head to Melbourne to join another club, almost certainly either Collingwood or North Melbourne. So while Brisbane hoped that Buckley might fall in love with their club once he was there, just about everybodyincluding the Bearsknew it was most likely that he was only ever going to be there for one season. For a young player, that extraordinary set of circumstances might have conspired to produce a season of distracted and sub-par performances. But not with a super-professional like Buckley. He won the AFLs inaugural Rising Star Award for the best young player in the competition, and finished runner-up in the Bears best-and-fairest award. The Brisbane side had done all they could do, and Nathan Buckley had given them his best. But nothing would stop him from moving to footys heartland.202Brisbane Bears team poster 1993 plus poster from Inside Football magazine of Buckley in Brisbane jumper.
