b'49The Nathan Buckley CollectionSANFL/Port Adelaide 1990-92After his first summer playing in the Northern Territory in 1989-90, Buckley joined up with the famous Port Adelaide Football Club for the 1990 winter season. He began in the under-19s and initially struggled for both game time, and impact. But he stepped up to the reserves in 1991, and did well enough there to make his senior SANFL debut. He ended up playing half a dozen senior games that year, but was given a footballing lesson in the Elimination Final by former Brisbane player Matthew Kennedy. That ended Ports season, and left Buckley with plenty of food for thought.Buckley took those lessons to heart and used them to propel him to one of the all-time great individual seasons in 1992. He won the Magarey Medal as the best and fairest player in the SANFL, and also took home Ports best-and-fairest and the Jack Oatey Medal for best on ground in the Grand Final as Port went on to win the flag.It was a remarkable, magical season. And everyone watching it knew that Nathan Buckley would not be spending any more time in the SANFL.185Nathan Buckleys Port Adelaide Football Club white team polo.
