Bentley, excellent condition. $180220There are fifty-one lots from the Clarrie Grimmett Collection to be found in the following pages; Lot 33, his VCA Cap, is the first of them, and Lot 145, his posthumous Adelaide Cricket Club Team of the Century Cap, is the last. The bats, balls, Baggy Greens, blazers, flip-books, documents and awards, have all been retained by his family until now. Many of the more important pieces had been on display on a long-term loan basis, in the museum at the Adelaide Oval. We are delighted to be able to offer our clients this once-in-a-generation opportunity to acquire these pieces, from one of Australias cricketing icons. In a career spanning 30 years, Clarrie accumulated some very impressive statistics; first bowler to take 200 Test match wickets, finishing with 216 in 37 matches, a record until exceeded by Alec Bedser in 1953; 44 Test wickets in a Series, against South Africa 1935-36, at only 14 runs per wicket; 1424 wickets in 248 first class matches, taking 5 wickets or more in an innings no less than 127 times; his record 513 wickets in Sheffield Shield contests still stands. In a unique perspective, equating a bowler taking 5 wickets in an innings with a batsman making 100 runs in an innings, Ashley Mallett asserts, in his biography of Grimmett, that Grimmetts haul of 5 or more wickets in 248 matches, is slightly more remarkable than Bradmans 117 centuries in 234 matches.3333CLARRIE GRIMMETTS VICTORIAN CRICKET ASSOCIATION Team Cap, dark blue wool, embroidered with the monogrammed initials of the V.C.A. in cream silk thread; label of Buckley & Nunn.Grimmett appeared in five matches as part of the V.C.A. team between 1918 and 1923, before moving the Adelaide in 1924.Provenance: The Clarrie Grimmett Collection; his family, by descent. $1,0001,50033AFIRST TEST MATCH, SYDNEY DEC.18, 1920 panoramic photographic print by Alan Row & Co., Argyle St., Sydney, depicting the crowd of 40,000 watching the Australian batsmen, Macartney and Bardsley, with the Englishmen in the field.
