b'78The Nathan Buckley CollectionInternational RulesThe International Rules Series was played between Australia and Ireland, showcasing a hybrid style of game that took elements of both Australian and Gaelic Football. The games had started back in the 1980s, went into abeyance around 1990 and then re-emerged in 1998, winning a reasonable degree of popularity over the next decade or so.Nathan Buckley was part of the first two series after the concept was reignited in 1998, firstly travelling to Ireland as part of the Australian touring party in 1998, then captaining the team that hosted Ireland the following year. He was named as Australias best player in most of those Tests.Buckley returned to International Rules in 2008, the year after he retired from AFL football, when he acted as an assistant to Australian coach Mick Malthouse.342340 Ex 347340International Rules series v Ireland 1998.
