He spent the 2008 and 2009 seasons providing commentary and analysis with Channel 7, 3AW and The Age newspaper. In those roles his insightful comments revealed a man with a great knowledge of the game who seemed perfectly cut out for a career in coaching. He first dipped his toes in the coaching waters during that 2008 season when he began a two-year stint as an assistant coach with the AIS-AFL Academy Squad. He also worked as an assistant coach with the Australian International Rules team that year.In 2009 he coached Victorian Country to the title in the NAB AFL U16 Championships, where his charges included Taylor Adams and Adam Treloar.Midway through 2009, amidst interest from North Melbourne, Collingwood announced that Buckley would rejoin the club as an assistant coach for the 2010 season, then take over from Mick Malthouse as senior coach at the end of 2011. He would end up remaining as senior coach until he resigned midway through 2021, having taken the Magpies to within a couple of minutes of a Premiership in 2018.355355CHANNEL SEVEN: A display comprising of a Collingwood guernsey with Channel 7 logo on rear, together with several photos of Nathan Buckley in the commentary box or with other members of Channel 7s commentary team.
