A record six Copeland trophies, the first of them in his very first season at the club, seven all-Australian selections, 260 games, 263 goals, nine years as captain. Plus the small matter of a Brownlow Medal in 2003, the Norm Smith Medal in 2002 and numerous other media awards. No wonder he has been inducted into both the AFL and Collingwood Halls of Fame, the Collingwood Team of the Century and has been made a Life Member of both the AFL CHK and Collingwood. But more than just the stats and awards, Buckley won the hearts of Magpie fans through his extraordinary, elite-level consistency during some of the clubs bleakest years. The mid-late nineties were not kind to Collingwood, and Buckley was one of the few positives their fans had to look forward to each week. There were times when it felt as if he was nearly carrying the team on his own (much as he would have hated that idea). If anyone deserved a flag as a player, then Buckley did.Unfortunately it didnt happen. After two years away making a name for himself in the media, Buckley returned to Collingwood in 2010 as an assistant coach, and with a controversial arrangement in place to take over as senior coach from Mick Malthouse after the 2011 season. He coached from 2012 until midway through 2021, leading the team in 218 matches for 117 wins at a percentage rate of 53.67%. In 2018 he led the Pies to a Grand Final, and they were in front until the last two minutes. He also coached the team to four other finals campaigns.Nathan Buckley remains, and always will be, one of Collingwoods greatest players, and also one of its favourite sons.212Ex 213212Collingwood Best Player award v Geelong 1994.
