Extremely rare commercial Zeppelin article destined for Australia. .$9001,200342ex 344342C 1929 (Oct. 24) Interrupted Mail cover from London to Cohuna Victoria franked 4d for 1d Empire rate plus airmail surcharge 3d per oz to Iraq, boarded Oct. 26 on Imperial Airways flight IE31, which was to experience dual aircraft incidents in Egypt: (i) City of Alexandria upon landing Oct. 30 for refuelling at Mersa Mutruh experienced a wingtip striking a buoy, the aircraft was damaged, passengers and mail were transferred to (ii) City of Athens which, due to lack of wind on take-off had difficulty lifting, and ran in to a reef, ripping the hull. Pilot and passengers escaped unhurt, mail was subsequently loaded aboard City of Baghdad, which resumed the flight Nov 2 arriving Basra the following day, thence surface to Australia.
