567 H.M.S. COSSACK: Album of 19th Century silver gelatin photographs tracing the voyage of the Cossack from Sydney to Melbourne, Hobart, Fiji & on to England. Many photos captioned & pages adorned with superb cartoon caricatures & dated 1873. The Cossack was originally commissioned by the Russian Navy but was commandeered at the start of the Crimean War by the British & she was sent into battle at Fort Gotland in 1855. She then went on to serve in the Cape Colony, China Station, New Zealand & the Australia Station. The Cossack was instrumental in the fight against "Blackbirding" in the South Seas & the court-martial of Dr. James Patrick Murray of the "Carl" for murdering 70 Islanders was conducted onboard. Of note are a series of photographs of Levuka Fiji. It became the subject of a book entitled "Darwin to Adelaide, 9 days, 9 hours, 15 minutes: Francis Birtles’ history making journey, 18th-27th Nov. 1924." This lot comprises thirteen (13) vintage silver gelatin photographs, each with negative number "376" or "C812" verso; 7 .8 x 13.7cm (approx. each). The images show Birtles with the car, camping in the Northern Territory, the local indigenous population, the large magnetic ant hills, etc. $1,500–2,000 571 Maharajah Saheb of Dharampur official photo album with captions together with book "Sangit Bhava" by Maharana Vijayadevji of Dharampur and signed by the author [Bombay, 1934], along with two bits of Indian silver gifted from the Maharajah to Mr and Mrs De Jongh of Melbourne.
