THE GRAHAM TOMS COLLECTION - EXPLORATION & DISCOVERY (LOTS 244–323) Graham Toms started collecting books soon after arriving in Australia in 1973. His personal collection grew over time and in 1974 he moved to Canberra and started collecting seriously. As a teacher of Geography he became a collector of material by Thomas Griffith Taylor, geographer, anthropologist and world explorer, particularly the material relating to Canberra. From that local focus developed an interest in Antarctica and from there to Graham’s major focus and the majority of material in this auction, namely, the life and achievements of James Cook. As often happens with collectors the personal collection grew so large that space became an issue. Almost inevitably, Graham became a purveyor of fine and rare books. His eventual retirement from teaching and his passion for fine historical books enabled him to enter a new and enjoyable phase of his life as a dealer in rare material. His wife, Lorelle, joined his team, becoming a restorer of fine material and is still involved in the restoration of rare items. This auction contains the basis of the material Graham acquired over many years with a particular focus on the early years of collection, starting with Griffith Taylor and progressing through early Australian explorations and discovery. 244 A pair of Captain Cook porcelain decanters, 20th century 28cm high $120–200 ❖ 245 CAPTAIN COOK Bicentenary 1770-1970 loving cup, black basalt porcelain by Royal Doulton, numbered 159, circa 1970 stamped "Royal Doulton, Made In England, This model is No. 159" 21cm high $150–250 ❖ 246 MAP of NEW SOUTH WALES: Robert Wilkinson, 1808.
