The original was MATHEMATICIAN & CARTOGRAPHER, VENICE), 1691. produced by Jacques Nicolas Bellin, the inaugural Ingnieur de 46.5 x 61.5 cm (plate size) la Marine of the Depot des cartes et plans de la Marine (the Finely executed copperplate-engraved map with some sensitiveFrench Hydrographic Office). The present map is augmented hand-colouring showing the west coast of Australia and thewith several Dutch translations and a new title at the bottom by east coast of New Zealand, as discovered by the Dutch in 1654;the engraver Jakob van der Schley, of Amsterdam. Published block-mounted, gilt framed and glazed, overall 76 x 91cm. nearly 20 years prior to Cooks discovery of the east coast in Coronelli was appointed cosmographer to the Venetian Republic1770, Bellin used a dotted line for his theories of the east coast and was commissioned to produce terrestrial and celestialof Australia, joining Van Diemens Land to Espiritu Santu (New globes for Louis XIV, which now reside in the BibliothqueHebrides) and Papua New Guinea and New Britain. In French National Francois Mitterand in Paris. and Flemish, along this imagined coast Bellin wrote I suppose $1,0001,500 that the land of Diemen could join with the land of the Holy Ghost but (this is) without proof.This map is highly original, with both received wisdom and new ideas. Additionally, it is one of the few eighteenth-century maps of Australia to not include Asia or the world. This Dutch edition is even rarer than its French counterparts.
