1927 (Apr 30) Alaska-Arctic Exploration Flight by Hubert Wilkins & Carl Ben Eielson with 'DETROIT NEWS - WILKINS EXPEDITION/.../("GWilkins")' cachet & 2c Washington tied by 'BARROW/ALASKA' cancel, 'FAIRBANKS/1927/MAY16/ALSASKA' arrival b/s. On the return leg the plane ran out of fuel & the two men took 13 days to trek 100 miles to Port Barrow. George Hubert Wilkins was an Australian adventurer. He signed this cover as "G Wilkins" but preferred to be known as Hubert. Carl Ben Eielson was a famous Alaskan bush pilot. He died in a plane crash in 1929.
