1919 (June 14) Newfoundland-Ireland per Captain John Alcock & Lieutenant Arthur Whitten Brown in a Vickers "Vimy", to Manchester with Newfoundland 'Trans-Atlantic/AIR POST/1919/ONE DOLLAR' on 15c SG 143 tied by 'ST JOHNS NFLD/JUN13/1919' machine cancel, rounded corners & a little soiled. A similar cover sold for £1764 at the Harmers of London sale of 14.12.2004. Alcock & Brown gained fame for completing the 1960 miles flight, crash-landing at Derrygimlagh Bog near Clifden in County Galway, and receiving the £10,000 prize offered by "The Daily Mail" for the first successful trans-Atlantic flight.
