DECORATIVE ARTS & COLLECTABLES
Our latest catalogue is a wonderful range of International decorative arts and crafts, furniture, watches and jewellery and even some movie posters and cameras.
Although the contents of the catalogue are mostly European and Asian, the first three items are very Australian, “icons”, in fact. Lot 1, the unique “Ned Kelly Story” film poster of 1909; Lot 2, the First World War Armistice Day signed flag, and Lot 3, early glass-plate negatives featuring Don Bradman and other “golden age” cricketers, are all worthy of attention.
The next main section of the catalogue is the very popular collecting area of “silver”. Lots 4 – 43 feature some superb pieces, with Lot 9 (an impressive George II Irish sterling silver tray by THOMAS JOHNSTON of Dublin, circa 1758) and Lot 10 (a superb pair of English sterling silver pepper pots made for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee) being particular favourites of ours during describing. The Decorative Arts section (Lots 44 – 162) includes Lot 49 (a stunning Émile Gallé Art Nouveau cameo and enamel glass vase, circa 1895), Lot 58 (a superb German carved ivory panel depicting a medieval triumphant return with thronging crowds amidst a castle backdrop and harbour scene), Lot 63 (a George III ladies travelling dressing case workbox, satinwood, hare wood, blackthorn marquetry inlay, interior sumptuously adorned in matching marquetry with original silk lining) and features, at Lots 106 – 132, some artworks, jewellery and gifts from the estate of the late Syed Amjad Ali CIE OBE, of Pakistan. Pieces like these, with such a fine provenance, are rarely offered, and we are delighted to have been entrusted with this historically significant group.
The highlights of the Furniture section (Lots 163 – 234) are undoubtedly Lots 189 & 190 (a French Chinoiserie lacquered armoire with ormolu mounts and marble top, circa 1930s, and the matching commode with ormolu mounts and marble top), Lot 192 (a stunning C. A. RICHTER designed Art Deco dressing table and chair, of amboyna, walnut, mogador, mother of pearl and ivory, circa 1927) and Lot 234 (a five piece café setting, designed by Josef HOFFMANN for the opening of the Cabaret Fledermaus in Vienna in 1907; manufactured by Jacob & Josef Kohn.).
The sections featuring Paintings & Artworks (Lots 235 – 266), Clocks (Lots 267 – 275) and Chinese & Asian Arts (Lots 276 – 354) are sure to delight you and produce some surprise results, as will the unusually strong offering of Cameras and Photographic Equipment (Lots 361 – 406) featuring mainly Leica cameras and lenses. The Posters this time (Lots 407 – 433) are drawn from the same collection as in our previous auction but feature Australian printed versions of the posters produced for foreign films. Our favourites are Lot 410 (the poster for Charlie Chaplin’s A WOMAN OF PARIS) and Lot 429 (BEDTIME FOR BONZO featuring that well-known funny man, Ronald Reagan!).
The last hundred lots (496 – 597) present a magnificent range of glittering jewels, rings, necklaces and earrings as well as some fine watches. Don’t miss the classic Lot 504 (a PATEK PHILIPPE Vintage gent’s wristwatch, 18ct yellow gold case and bracelet with blue dial), nor the incredible Lot 552 (spectacular pair of Art Deco pendant earrings, 18ct white gold with two impressive emeralds approximately 23.7ct and adorned with baguette and brilliant cut diamonds). It doesn’t cost anything to dream……
