JUBILEE PREMIERSHIP CARNIVAL - Won By - COLLINGWOOD FOOTBALL CLUB - PLAYER - R. RICHARDS - 9/5/51” The federal government had declared a special “Jubilee Day” public holiday to mark the 1901–1951 milestone. To mark the event, the VFL created a lightning tournament featuring all 12 senior clubs between rounds 3 and 4 of the regular season. The tournament, officially known as the Jubilee-Centenary Lightning Premiership, was held at the MCG to celebrate 50 years of the Federation of Australia. Collingwood won the title by defeating Melbourne by 6 points in the Grand Final. The Collingwood squad, featuring club legends of the era, navigated the knockout brackets to secure their second official Lightning Premiership flag. Only the players who took the field that day were presented with these uniquely designed, historic medals. This is the first example we have offered. Ron Richards (1928-2013, brother of legendary captain Lou Richards) was a tough, courageous utility player who played 143 senior games for Collingwood between 1947 and 1956. The 1951 season was arguably the finest year of Richards’ individual career. Beyond playing in this winning Lightning Premiership side, he was named Collingwood’s Best Player of the Finals Series later that year. He later went on to play a starring role on the wing in the Magpies’ famous 1953 senior Premiership victory.$2,000–3,000 36
