“H.R.H. The Duke of Cornwall and York Opening
the First Commonwealth Parliament of Australia
- May 9th 1901” photogravure after the original
painting by Charles Nuttall (1872-1934), window-mounted,
70.5 x 113cm overall; other examples known to be held by the
National Library of Australia, The State Library Victoria, and
Museums Victoria Collections.
Present in the image are 344 identifiable portraits of the
principal dignitaries in attendance, including the Duke and
Duchess of Cornwall and York, Lord and Lady Hopetoun, the
six State Governors, Sir Edmund Barton, Sir Samuel Griffith,
and each of the members of the Inaugural Parliament (five
future Prime Ministers amongst them).
After Nuttall completed the painting, it was sent to Paris to be
engraved; it then travelled to London and was inspected by
King Edward VII at Buckingham Palace before being returning
to Melbourne. The original painting hangs today in the Royal
Exhibition Building, Melbourne. Prints of the painting were
