THE SPENCER SANDILANDS COLLECTION
SPENCER SANDILANDS grew up in South Gippsland in the small fishing port of Port Albert. He came to Melbourne to study at university, developing a strong interest in history and the exploration and explorers of the world. He started dealing in antiques while he was studying. These experiences culminated in a lifelong passion for cartography and antique prints and maps. Spencer created the Antique Print and Map Gallery in Prahran in the early 1970s and concentrated on Australian Natural history, topographical views, maps and charts. Spencer’s business took him around the world acquiring stock. He opened a shop in Los Angeles in the 1970s and in the early 1990s opened a gallery in George Street Sydney, all in addition to his Melbourne gallery.
Spencer closed his retail shops in 2000 and after a short sojourn back at Port Albert he went to live in Argentina, returning to Australia and Port Albert in 2012. After restoring the historic Bond Store on the foreshore at Port Albert he opened the Maritime Art and Antiques Gallery. The gallery specialised in prints, paintings, charts, maps, artifacts and decorative items relating to the sea. This gallery was successfully transferred to Eden in southern New South Wales where he and his wife settled. The gallery was closed mid 2026.
The collection reflects Spencer’s journey in the antique trade from the late 1960s to today and evidences his intellectual and fully informed interest in printed history and the maritime world.
