STAMPS, COINS & POSTAL HISTORY

Live Auction

Sat 22nd Aug 2020

Time: 12:00pm

N.B: This is a two day auction beginning from 12.00pm AEST each day Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 August

We are delighted to be sharing our latest catalogue featuring stamps and postal history – and a few coin and banknote lots to get things started.

So much has changed since December 2019, when we conducted our previous philatelic and numismatic auctions and it seems like so much longer than seven months ago. As most of you know, while the impact of Covid-19 has caused us some delays and the need to modify the way we do things, it has not stopped us from continuing to provide our buyers and sellers with exciting auction catalogues and extremely successful outcomes. Typical of the sales we have conducted under the mandatory and appropriate constraints imposed by the Victorian and Australian governments, our most recent auction, International Decorative Arts, at the end of June, resulted in a 91% clearance rate and attracted hundreds of new clients from all around the world.

This catalogue is full of wonderful material – from great individual rarities, to huge quantities of low value items – whatever the size of your budget. It is clear that collectors are looking for items that give them pleasure to add to their existing collections or to make a start on a new collecting area. To mention just a few:

  • Lots 85 – 112, offer you a fine range of Kangaroo material, in particular some design essays and artwork, as well as two lovely 5/- Imprint blocks of 4;
  • Lots 113 – 139, the KGV Heads section includes a very rare 4d Yellow Orange CA Monogram block with INVERTED WATERMARK (Lot 126), the UNIQUE 5d Chestnut IMPERFORATE Plate Proof block of 4 (Lot 128), the 5d Chestnut Imprint block of 4 (Lot 129) with a catalogue value of $9500+ and the exceptional (Lot 138) 1/4 CofA block of 48, MUH – probably the largest block of this stamp still extant!
  • Lots 141 – 189, the pre-decimal Australian Commonwealth section is brimming with highlights: don’t overlook the complete sheet of 3d Kookaburra Miniature Sheets featured on our front cover (Lot 150), or the magnificent 5/- Sydney Harbour Bridge Imprint strip of 3 (Lot 156); and how often have you seen complete panes of 40 of the 1935 Jubilee set of 3 (Lot 164)? The 1959 (SG.313) 4d lake Queen Elizabeth II, variety “Imperforate at right”, MUH single (Lot 181) is one of only 2 examples known and is in superb condition, as is the corner block of 16 5/- White paper Cattle (Lot 185).
  • The Australian decimal section is undoubtedly highlighted by the complete set of sheets of the 1966 Birds (Lot 228) and the complete sheets of the 1966 Navigators (Lot 229). You’ll wait a longtime to see these issues in complete sheets again!
  • Other Australian highlights include the spectacular IMPERFORATE 20c Waterfalls part sheet (Lot 240), the 2015 “Green omitted” 65c Christmas pane (Lot 244), one of only two known, the magnificent 20/- Postage Due (Lot 247) and the rare 3d Postage Due Imprint block of 4 (Lot 250).
  • Our many collectors of Australian Aerophilately will be delighted to see Lots 263 – 329. Within those numbers some of the most remarkable exploits of our early aviation heroes – Ross & Keith Smith, Charles Kingsford Smith, Charles Ulm and many others – can be seen and even held in your hands. I think I can even hear the propellers starting up…..
  • The Australian Colonial section (Lots 374 – 578) will be of particular interest, especially to collectors of New South Wales, and especially Tasmania, with our strongest offering for several years. We have the benefit of being able to offer you selections from several good Tasmania collections, not the least of which is the wonderful material assemble by Malcolm Groom for his award-winning “Pictorials” exhibit.

Other sections of note include AUSTRIA (Lots 641 – 650) including joined pairs of the UNISSUED Anti-Fascist stamps of 1946, CHINA (Lots 667 – 676), CHRISTMAS ISLAND (especially Lot 680), the 1963 Plate Proofs of COCOS (KEELING) IS. (Lot 683), CYPRUS (Lots 688 – 692), GERMANY, etc, (Lots 712 – 735), Great Britain (Lots 739 – 783), INDIAN Airmails (Lots 794 – 800), ISRAEL (Lots 803 – 812), ITALY & COLONIES (Lots 813 – 819), MALAYAN STATES (Lots 825 – 829), NEW GUINEA & N.W.P.I. (Lots 842 – 877), NEW ZEALAND (Lots 878 – 888) and the spectacular offering of PAPUA (Lots 892 – 939).

We hope you enjoy exploring the catalogue and we would, of course, be delighted to hear from you if you would like to discuss consigning some similar material for our next auction.

We wish you all continued good health and enjoyment from your hobby, and look forward to hearing from you once you’ve reviewed this wonderful catalogue.
