VICTOR TRUMPER’S MATCH-USED CRICKET BAT, PRESENTED TO JACK RYDER, WHO IN TURN PRESENTED IT TO KEITH WILLIAM STACKPOLE.
Having used the A.G. Spalding & Brothers “Hayward Century” full-size cricket bat during the 1911-12 English tour of Australia, Trumper finally used the bat during his Testimonial Match, held at the Sydney Cricket Ground in February 1913. The four-day match between New South Wales (led by Clem Hill) and The Rest (led by Trumper) resulted in a draw (rain disrupted the second day and washed out the fourth) but raised the then record amount of £2,950 towards Trumper’s retirement. Trumper made the highest individual and cumulative score with this bat (126 n.o., and 61).
The bat is signed and dedicated in ink “Used in Testimonial Match 7/2/13”; it also bears the dated signature of John Nobbs 12/2/13. Nobbs was a soccer and cricket administrator, a JP and founder of the Royal Australian Historical Society.
