Lot 440ARTIST UNKNOWN, (Portrait of a nobleman), watercolour on board, 13 x 10cm (oval). Although titled in the mount "George, Fourth Earl of Clarendon, 1822" we believe the subject is Juan Álvarez y Mendizábal, born Juan Álvarez Méndez (1790 –1853), a Spanish economist and politician who served as Prime Minister of Spain from September 1835 to May 1836. He had been born to Rafael Álvarez Montañés, a cloth merchant, and Margarita Méndez, a Christianised Jewess of Marrano origin.
