Description:
CONTENDER DINGHY, with boom & rudder, blue hull, length of boat 4.93 metres (16ft 2"), length of mast 6.5 metres (21ft 4"). Designed by Bob Miller in 1967, the original concept of this "Contender" was as a single-handed high performance sailing dinghy as a possible successor to the Finn dinghy for Olympic competition. The boat won the 1969 Olympic trials, but for a variety of reasons was never adopted as an Olympic class.
The Contender is recognized as an International Class by the International Sailing Federation, the governing body of sail boat racing, which administers the class rules.
This is the original Contender prototype, hand-built by Ben Lexcen and friends. Much loved by Ben, this boat was used by him to teach his children & grandchildren to sail.
