1838 entire letter headed "Sydney 15th Decr 1838" & signed "W McGarvie", to Scotland rated "3" with oval 'PAID SHIP LETTER/[crown]/DE*24/1838/SYDNEY' d/s in red, unframed 'INDIA LETTER/FALMOUTH' b/s in red rated "1/4" crossed-out & "1/6", London transit cds & boxed 'GLASGOW' arrival b/s both with indistinct dates, light overall soiling. [William McGarvie arrived per "Comet" at Sydney in 1828, where he became a newspaper proprietor, bookseller & pastoralist at Port Macquarie. Despite his own success, he discourages the addressee from emigrating to NSW: "...I perceive by your letter that Waugh's pamphlet has set you all agog...what he states was true at the time the letters were written yet now they are totally inapplicable and calculated to do Much Mischief..." In 1837, the Scottish settler David Waugh wrote a glowing account of the Colony that accelerated the already booming tide of Scottish migration]
