1871 large piece (200x143mm) from a registered parcel to Kent with remarkable Three-Issue franking (faults) of VDL Imperf 4d & Perf 10 1d x2 and 'TASMANIA' Imperf 6d & 1/- (cut-to-shape) all tied by BN '63' of New Norfolk, private 'BOURNBANK/Parish of/Wellington' h/s & 'N NORFOLK/22 4 71' postmaster's provisional h/s, sloping 'TOO-LATE' h/s applied at Hobart, a few repaired edge-tears & parts of the address label removed when the registration ribbon was removed. Endorsed "Printed Book with Photographs..." & signed "Molesworth Jeffery" which permitted mailing at the concessional rate for a "book packet" + 6d registration. A remarkable "cover", and one of only six recorded bearing the 6d registration rate that applied between 1871 & 1880. Ex Randall Askeland, Patrick Reid - acquired at the Prestige auction of 17/10/2008 for $3910 - & David McNamee. A really splendid parcel usage, all the more exceptional or having been registered.
Sent two days after the departure of the English Mail for April, so held until the following month, as confirmed by the London arrival d/s of 16JY71. Molesworth Jeffery was a prominent early Colonial photographer.
