INWARDS MAIL: 1900 (June 25) cover from British New Guinea with embossed '[bishop's mitre]/M.J.S.-W.' on the flap, to Sydney with Queensland Four Figures 2d tied by 9-bars 'BNG' cancel of 'SAMARAI/BNG' (26mm cds alongside), small faults & some soiling. Ex Tim Rybak & Roger Lee.
‹In 1891, an Anglican Mission was established at Samarai but relocated to Dogura, on Milne Bay, the next year. In 1898, Montagu John Stone-Wigg was appointed the first Anglican Bishop of New Guinea. In 1902 he spoke at Cambridge University on the similarities between Christianity and indigenous Papuan religions.
