INWARDS MAIL: 1848 (Jan) long Toulmin Packet cover from England to a "Cattle Dealer/Gundaroo, County of Murray/New South Wales" with 'LEEDS' cds & London Paid cds both in red, endorsed "above 1oz" & rated "4/-" both in red, 'SHIP LETTER/[crown]/JA17/1849/SYDNEY' b/s, poor GPO Sydney cds & rated "7/4d" in black (confirmed by addition on the reverse), endorsed "not to be found at Gundaroo" & at left "Advertised/Unclaimed/July 1849", apparently returned under cover to England where 'RETURNED FROM' h/s in red applied below "Gundaroo", rather battered & soiled but "full of character". A rare high-rate survivor. Carried from London per Toulmin Packet "Alert", departed Gravesend 1/9/1848, arrived Sydney 17/1/1849.
