This will be a means of teaching them how to perform their duty, when corporals, and surely they must be very unfit for sentinels, if they cannot be trusted alone. With the bookplate of Lieutenant-General Sir Robert Drew$3005001084COOK, James & FORSTER, GeorgeA Voyage Round the World Performed in His Britannic Majestys Ships the Resolution and Adventure, in the Years 1772, 1773, 1774, and 1775Illustrated with a Chart of the Southern Hemisphere.[Dublin; W.Whitestone, S.Watson, R. Contemporary calf with later title labels. A Fine complete set of this important Irish Edition. The chart is a highly detailed, large-format map of the Southern Hemisphere, showing the tracks of the major voyages of exploration in the Southern Hemisphere from 1595 to10851775. The map highlights Cooks explorations to prove the non-existence of a vast southern continent on his second voyage. The polar projection radiates around the South Pole, which does not feature a land mass at its centre. It does, however, feature numerous notes about mountains and islands of ice.The first sighting of the Antarctic mainland would come only in 1820, with no confirmation of the extent of the continent until the later nineteenth century. Cook, however, was able to circumnavigate the continent and prove that it was not the massive supercontinent long believed to be in the south of the world. The map includes the coastlines of New Holland, New Zealand, parts of Southeast Asia, Africa and South America. Surrounding the circular projection are tables of latitude and longitude of southern Pacific islands, most of which were discovered on Cooks first (1768-1771) or second voyage (1772-1775).$2,0002,500 1085COOK, James (Captain)A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean; Undertaken by Command of His Majesty, for Making Discoveries in the Northern Hemisphere: Performed Under the Direction of Captains Cook, Clerke, and Gore, in the Years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779, and 1780.[London; Stockdale, Scatcherd & Whitaker, Fielding & Hardy; 1784] First Edition. Portrait frontispiece, folding map, and forty-nine engraved plates, some folding.Appearing shortly after the publication of the full quarto edition, this was the first account to reach the wider public, eager for details of Captain Cooks death in Hawaii. In keeping with the popular demand for an engaging narrative, the text was abridged omitting some technical and navigational details. Free from cumbersome passages, this edition reads more like an adventure than the official quarto edition. Likewise, the plates have been re-engraved for the smaller format.$1,5002,000 1084'
