His first year with the club saw the team winning the VFA Premiership, and he would win the Associations best-and-fairest award, the prestigious J.J. Liston Trophy, the following year. 1990 would prove to be another landmark year for Rounds career, as he captain-coached the Seagulls to their Premiership win at the tender age of 40, being subsequently awarded the Norm Goss Memorial Medal for his Grand Final performance.
