HALL * 1876 * 68 YDS; 180mm.Accompanied by a 2016 article by Tony De Bolfo, describing the history of the historic chalice on the occasion of its return to the Blueseum for exhibition.William Trusty Hall, the winner of the trophy, was (and still is) Geelongs only five-time premiership player.On April 8th 1876 Carlton conducted its 4th Annual Sports Day at the old University Ground on Madeline Street (now Swanston Street). More than 800 people witnessed a series of footraces, as well as the 440 yard handicap flat race for members of Carltons first Twenty, won by Bill Newing, and an Open Mile handicap open to all comers. The Drop Kick Competition was open to Challenge Cup club representatives, including Carlton, which was represented by its vice-captain, George McGill, Harry Nudd and one of the Donovan brothers. Hall of Geelong won with a kick of 68 yards; second was James Rickards (Carlton Imperials) with just over 60 yards, and J. Macdonald (University) was third, at just over 59 yards.Born in 1855 and educated at Geelong Grammar, Hall represented Geelong as a player from 1872-84 and 1887, and was a member of their Grand Final winning teams in 1878, 1879, 1880, 1882 and 1883. He captained the team at various times and later served the club as a committeeman and secretary. In February 2016 Hall was one of eight greats of the forgotten 1800s to be inducted into the Geelong Football Hall of Fame. . $25,00035,000539'
