THE ISAAC ALBERT NEWTON COLLECTION Born on the 11th of August 1853 in Portsea, Hampshire, Newton arrived in Australia aboard “The Compeer” accompanied by his parents Joseph James Newton and Sarah Tarring. The family settled in Melbourne and opened a shoe business in South Melbourne where Isaac was put to work. Newton soon turned his hand to the art of carving in his spare time. Newton married Elizabeth Yoxall on the 28th of June, 1884 and had one child Ethal May. This fine collection of chip carving by Newton resided with Ethal at 12 Hotham Grove, Elsternwick until her death in 2017 .
