JOSEF HOFFMANN (1870-1956), WIENER WERKSTÄTTE stunning Austrian silver and ivory tea service (Model No. S se 3), comprising a teapot, milk jug, sugar bowl, sugar tongs and tray, circa 1918.
This model tea service was exhibited at the, Arts Decoratifs Et Industriels Modernes in Paris in 1925.
Stamped “WIENER/WERK/STÄTTE, Made In Austria, 900” with additional maker’s monogram and assay marks,
the tray 45cm wide, the pot 18cm high, 2664 grams total including handles.

PROVENANCE:
The life story of Henry (Heinrich) Teltscher (1921–2003), is eloquently recorded in his self-published 1997 book, The Glückspilz (The lucky devil). His early life in an affluent middle-class Jewish Viennese family enabled Henry to enjoy a good all-round education at the local ‘gymnasium’ (high school), but after the Nazi take-over, when he was only a teenager, life changed dramatically and he wrote, “It certainly was a time of fundamental change in my life.” Through a family connection, Teltscher managed to leave for England before Kristallnacht (1938) and in 1939 he was joined there by his mother and sister.

His arrest in England, as an ‘enemy alien’ and subsequent deportation aboard the Dunera, brought him to Australia in September 1940. Through his ability to make the most of every situation in which he found himself, his internment in concentration camps in Hay and Tatura, gave him many opportunities to meet other fellow internees with whom he forged life-long friendships. After the war, Teltscher was involved in pioneering work on the newly discovered drug, penicillin, and after completing his studies went on to become Professor of Applied Biology and Head of the Department at RMIT University of Melbourne.

I got to know Henry in the 1980s, when we were both members of the Brighton Philatelic Society. My recollection is that we spent almost as much time discussing stamps and postal history, as we did talking about the extraordinary circumstances of his life journey. I am delighted, so many years later, on behalf of his family, to be able to offer at auction, this magnificent Josef Hoffmann tea service.

THE ROUTT COLLECTION (Lots 145-187)
Garland Chamberlain Routt (1911–1986) was a prominent American political scientist and diplomat, who dedicated his career to public liaison and international cultural affairs. He is best remembered for his foundational research into legislative behaviour and his long tenure with the U.S. government. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he completed a diplomatic assignment in Ireland. In 1953, he joined the newly established United States Information Agency (USIA). He worked extensively as a cultural and public affairs officer across the globe, serving in Jamaica, Trinidad, and Burma throughout the 1960s.

It was during his time as U.S. Ambassador to Burma, that he and his late wife, Elizabeth, collected local arts and crafts, with a particular interest in Burmese silver. Leaving hastily, due to the coup d’état in March 1962, Burma turned out to be Garland’s final foreign posting, so everything went back to Washington, where they lived until his death in 1986. Betty then moved to Melbourne; with advancing Alzheimer’s her son, Bill, was able to take care of her, until she passed away in 2007.

While some items were exhibited and sold at East-West Galleries in the 1990s, the items listed below, Betty’s favourites, stayed with her and her family until now.
