Elegant footballer still singing the 'Blues'

If the Carlton Football Club had a recruitment procedure in 1966, nobody told Ron Barassi. The mercurial captain-coach took one look at Ian ‘Robbo’ Robertson and signed the 20 year-old on the spot. It was the beginning of an eight year career with the ‘Blues’ that included one of its most successful on-field periods.

Now key items of Robertson’s sporting memorabilia are being offered for sale through Leski Auctions. They include his three highly sought after premiership medals and four of his Carlton jumpers, including those believed to have been worn in a grand final.

“Among the most collectible VFL/AFL items are premiership medals,” says Charles Leski. “We don’t see these very often and this is the first time that three are being offered at the one auction.

“This was the golden era of the Carlton Football Club under the inspirational Ron Barassi. ‘Robbo’ originally tried to join the Footscray Football Club where his father played but they showed no interest. Barassi saw something in the young player and seized the opportunity, such was his ‘eye’ for talent.”
