The ABC television program ‘Countdown’ was not only a child of its generation but the father of the next.
Some of the greatest stars of the contemporary music scene were influenced by the people who drove their parents wild. A large format visitor’s autograph book (measuring 29 x 22 cm) from the ‘Countdown’ program will be offered for sale by Leski Auctions next month. Dating from the 1970s when the television program was at the peak of its success, it comprises more than 200 autographs of both local and international artists. Some have gone on to greater fame while others, like the show itself, are now consigned to history. The program was one of the most successful in Australian television and the autograph book is a lasting memento of its place in our history. Among the autographs are Kate Bush, Flo & Eddie, Boy George, Leo Sayer, Chris Bailey and Cheech and Chong. There is also a self-caricature of Angus from AC/DC, the heavy rock band that not only survived the death of front-man, Bon Scott, but has become a legend in the music scene. Lot 2066 will be offered for sale by Leski Auctions in Melbourne on Wednesday, June 3rd at 5.00pm. It has a presale estimate of $1,000 – $1,500. “Australia’s music industry came of age during the ‘Countdown’ era and proved that we had the musical skill and the artistic clout of much larger countries,” says Charles Leski. “It was also the making of bands like ABBA, which is an indication of just how potent it was among Australia’s youth of the 1970s.” You can view the entire catalogue for the June 3rd auction here: Art, Photography and General Memorabilia |
