Douglas Thompson - Photographer |
|
b. Stanthorpe Q 1932
Thompson trained as a photographer in South Port Studio at the age of 17. RAAF photographer 1950-56 including 3 ½ years as instructor at RAAF School of Photography. He worked in Melbourne then 6 years in London where he developed his skills in creative photography especially the nude. On his return to Australia he became a prominent Sydney commercial / illustrative photographer specialising in arts & crafts. In the 60's – 80's his work appeared in many books and publications. Continuing always to produce pictorial works, his photographs and articles appeared in many magazines of photography notably 'Australian Photography'. In 1967 he became the first Australian to be published in the prestigious GrossBild – 'International Photo Technique' and later in several of their publications including 'The School of Nude Photography' and their international photo compilations. He held 7 one man shows at various venues in Sydney, the first in 1974 in the Thorburn Gallery being one of the early large shows in Australia and certainly the first to be entirely of the nude. Other exhibitions were at the Coventry & Holdsworth Galleries, a Sydney city ANZ bank, the Cutcliffe Gallery and the Goodman Gallery. The Cutcliffe exhibition was favourably reviewed by Max Dupain who included two reproductions in the S.M.H review. In 1979 he drew attention by photographing nude families, on this subject he appeared on the Mike Walsh Show, and had the entire arts page of 'The Australian' devoted to him. He is a firm believer in the importance of the print which is, after all, what the artist presents. Hand printing by the photographer is essential to properly make the result his work. We are delighted to offer some of Thompsons works in this auction.
