Ray's Boxing Collection a Knockout

RAY MITCHELL M.B.E.
1919 - 2005

Boxer, writer, referee, trainer, actor, promoter, contributor to hundreds of boxing books and magazines, T.V. personality, speaker and lecturer and the man responsible for the bulk of the boxing material in our latest auction.

Ray was, without a doubt, Australia's leading boxing authority. On his television show, Boxing Corner, which ran from 1958-1963, he answered over 9000 questions "off the cuff" as people called in. Stories about his remarkable recall ability are told by everyone who knew him. Fighters would call Ray and ask for their own boxing records and Ray was able to do it from memory.

Ray refereed more than 2000 professional fights in NSW, Victoria, Tasmania, Darwin and New Guinea. Ray's major contribution to the boxing world was his editing of the Australian Ring Magazine. He was the dominant force in the Australian boxing world from the early 50's through to the 70's.

Since Ray wrote for hundreds of periodicals, magazines and newspapers, he had a remarkable library. That library makes up a large portion of this auction. He was blessed with a 192 IQ and the ability to exist on 2 hours sleep a night. He would have had to, to amass this amount of material.

Charles Leski Auctions will be offering the Ray Mitchell collection in June 2007.
