Ranging from 1681 to 1994 it is basically traditional with a strong emphasis on postal history. Three specialisations are Poortman stamps of Leopold 3, Lunettes & Elström stamps of Baudouin. Also a large WW1 offering in 4 vols and 4 vols postmark study representing all areas in Belgium, France Holland & UK.

There are many special WW2 sheets. There are albums of airmail stamps and special flights, railways (inc all 150 th anniversary sheets of 1985), 4 of 5 sheets issued of 50c dark blue Montenez (1921), 2 x 1st issue sheets of 10c Roi Casqué etc. At left are examples of importance.

Above left -1761 EL (part) from Antwerp to Thurles in Ireland via London and Dublin rated 1/8d. There are 3 interesting Bishops Marks on the re-verse, also a Loughrea (Dublin) linear arrival cachet

Left - Registered letter weighing between 80 & 100 gm sent on free night airmail 18 April 1930 (A night flight to and from London began 14/15 April 1930, which ran free of airmail charge until 2/3 October 1931. The special blue airmail sticker shown designated these night flights.)

The collection contains another one of these covers flown from Bruges to Dublin 10 June 1930.

Below and left - Willem Kuypers, a Meuse river boatman, provided an important service smuggling mail into and out of Belgium. In 1953 a cache of undelivered letters from 1915 was found in the attic of Kuypers former house at 10 Korversplein, Wyk (bij) Maastricht (see reduced sender’s address at left, which corresponds with that given by Silverberg in Le Courrier des Mlitaires Belges Internées aux Pays-Bas et en Suisse (1914-1918). Far left - cover Hasselt to London via Maastricht November 1914 .

Left - Many 1936 and 1951 issued Poortman stamps and covers - 20 Fr yellow-orange of 1948 and 20 Fr vermillion red posted 1951. Also 5 phoney war letters to Aus tralia (censored in Oz) & 3 Pan Am Clipper letters via Lisbon to USA; also to Australia (many), Congo, South Africa, Europe. Great offering for a specialist to enhance their Poortman study.

A limited selection from this well written up and presented collection will be on view at Stampex, 20 - 24 September, in London at the British Design Centre in Islington. To maintain continuity and preserve the integrity of significant research, the collection will be offered in larger lots.
