New South Wales is acknowledged as producing the first postal stationery when in 1838 the embossed letter sheets were issued
to the public. It is also argued that these letter sheets are in fact the world's first prepaid postage system pre-dating the
Penny Black by two years.
With such an important beginning the study of NSW postal stationery offers great interest and challenges for the
researcher and collector. The Gold Medal collection of the late Dr Edric Druce being offered in our forthcoming sale
A284 provides evidence of the diversity and interest which can be obtained from this field. The collection is the result
of many years study, accumulation and searching.
All aspects of postal stationery are extensively covered. Postal cards occurred in a wide range of printings and, together with the wrappers, registered envelopes and letter cards provide a rich and complex field for the student. New South Wales realised the potential of promoting the scenic value of the State through their postal issues. The Railway postal cards and scenic Christmas, New Year and Greetings cards are a fascinating and attractive series with many extremely scarce issues present and much research still to be conducted. The collection contains a number of only recorded examples of scenes on these issues as well as proof material of unissued scenes. The important archival material is available through all aspects of the stationery issued with a number of unique items. Those with an interest in the commercial and social history of NSW will find many important items in the printed to private order stationery with some most attractive and colourful advertising envelopes in the collection.
