The "GOLDEN AGE CRICKET BAT":
A full size "Gradidge" Cricket Bat with an extraordinary range of 19th Century
signatures. At Charles Leski Auctions we have had the pleasure of selling hundreds
of signed cricket bats, many hundreds of team sheets, autograph pages,
team photographs, cigarette and trade card sets, Baggy Greens, Baggy Yellows,
blazers, postcards, and all other types of cricket memorabilia.
But when this bat arrived at our rooms with instructions that it should be auctioned,
we knew we had come upon the greatest piece of cricket memorabilia it has yet been
our privilege to handle. Neither we, nor the vendor, knows who the well-connected
cricket player or enthusiast was, who carefully and methodically approached over
200 first class cricketers of the day and had them sign his cricket bat. The cream of
English and Australian cricket in the 1890s is represented here – Grace and Trumper
have both signed this bat, Spofforth and Rhodes, Ranji and Noble, Lord Hawke and
Darling (Rick Darling’s great uncle). In addition, the bat has been signed by several
other notable sportsmen and public figures. Beautifully presented in a case which
permits for viewing from all sides, this remarkable and precious bat truly documents
the “golden age” of cricket and we are delighted to offer it here for auction.
