British Empire Exhibition

Interesting material from deceased estates in sale 265.

One of the more unusual sections of sale 265 comprises 30 lots from the "Michael Davies" collection of Great Britain, which tells the story of the British Empire Exhibition held at Wembley Stadium in London during the summers of 1924 & 1925.

The collection includes First Day covers for both years, covers with special postmarks, advertising, humourous & picture postcards illustrating the Pavilions & Palaces of the various Dominions & Colonies that were represented etc. & some cinderellas. Besides the mail originating from the Exhibition there are covers illustrating the special advertising cancellations used in various Empire countries, including 34 from Australia with examples of the scarce Launceston & Ballarat types.

This is a great opportunity for the collector of International Exhibition related items & could be developed into an interesting exhibit.

A general collection in two suitcases revealed on careful examination an interesting & valuable range of China including rare 1951 high values with pink network unused, 1960s miniature sheets such as 3y Mei Lan-fang mint unmounted, & valuable Cultural Revolution issues. These were all found in envelopes as supplied by a new issue service, which highlights the importance of having accumulations properly evaluated by specialists.

The Australian decimals section features a stunning and unique block of 16 of the 1976 35c Wittenoom Gorge with the error 'purple omitted', which was recently discovered in an accumulation of sheets & blocks from the period which had lain undisturbed & unrecognized for some years.
