Addressed to Mrs. Channon in Sydney (28 Jan. arrival cds), written and addressed by her husband, Meteorologist L. Channon. Accompanied by his original 4-page letter, headed "Sunday Jan.5th 1908 in which he graphically describes the conditions on board and the scenes at the departure from Lyttleton: "...A great multitude assembled around the wharves as we slowly steamed away. Cheer after cheer greeted our gallant little ship as she passed..... We have had nothing but rough seas & stormy weather since we started. Nearly everyone on board has been ill...." Kinsey, the Expedition Agent, as a personal souvenir franked and serviced as follows: 9 Feb.1911 "BRIT.ANTARCTIC EXPD" cds tieing Victoria Land 1d (SG.A3). This was the day the "Terra Nova" arrived at Cape Evans in Antarctica; 9 Aug.1912 CHRISTCHURCH cds tieing 1d Universal, when the "Terra Nova" arrived back in New Zealand; 4 Feb.1913 "BRIT ANTARCTIC EXPD" cds tieing Victoria Land ½d pair (SG.A2 x 2), when the ship was en route back to New Zealand after the news of Scott's death; "LOOSE SHIP'S LETTER - POSTED IN ANTARCTICA - S.Y.AURORA - A.A.E." cachet signed by Ship's Master J.K.Davis. The "Aurora" visited Lyttleton in August 1913 and Kinsey gave Davis six covers to be thus cancelled in Antarctica when they went south to collect Douglas Mawson. Mawson was picked up on Dec.12, 1913.
