| 48 | WONDERFUL PAIR OF VISITING BOOKS, ex The Lady Mayoress of Melbourne (Lady Hennessy), covering the period 1914-17, in two richly bound and fine condition gold-embossed large folio morocco bindings. A veritable panalopy of Melbourne's elite of this exciting era, when Melbourne was the seat of Federal Parliament, including many important local people and visitors. Feature entries among the approx 2500 signatures and home addresses are Alfred Deakin - Australia's first Prime Minister (several times), Duke Kahounamoku and his 12 member entourage from Hawaii and the Manly Life Saving Club (Duke famously brought surfing to Australia during this visit, and was the Olympic gold medal champion in 100m swimming at the 1912 Olympic Games). Others include many members of Parliament, many military figures including visiting Captains and Admirals from Japanese warships, pognantly Mrs John Monash (several times, whilst General Monash was overseas), Captain Walter Thring (the architect of Australia's Naval Defence in this era); many racing identities (Bagot, Byron, Moore, J.J.Liston); all the leading luminaries from Melbourne University (Baldwin Spencer, Masson, Sugden, McInerney). Female notables - Vida Goldstein, Misses Betty & Esther Patterson, Louise Mack. Of interest is the typical street address of Melbourne's wealthy, which was simply the house name and street.
