Prepared in the 1950's when the plates were discovered the impressions are made on brownish paper (each measuring 76cm by 51cm) by hand as there were no longer presses available to take quality impressions of the plates. The proofs show the final arrangement of the plates (23 impressions each with three cliches added down the left side and also the cliche removed to prepare the plate for the 1908 Fleet cards. All the final flaws on the cliches are plated and accompanied by a letter explaining the circumstances in which the impressions were taken, Believed to be only 5 prints taken. An interesting item. Archival records indicate that Tasmania was allocated a budget of £20 to purchase paper to produce cards which would be suitable for hand painting but they did not respond to requests from the Deputy Postmaster General for their sales figures. It is unsure whether they produced such cards and this item may be evidence that they did. Accompanied by mint example of a similar card. The writer is fishing in the Highlands and comments that he has handed the card to a drover with a mob of cattle for posting at Bothwell and that they are considering a 12 mile walk to Lake Echo in search of better fishing (having only caught one 8lb fish).
