PHAR LAP'S SADDLE, USED BY JOCKEY BILL ELLIOT. As Bill Elliot rode at an extremely low weight (under 44kg), and Phar Lap was constantly carrying high weights, Harry Telford - the legendary horse's trainer, had this large saddle made specifically for Elliot's use on Phar Lap. [The saddle, along with other riding equipment, was purchased by its present owner from the widow of the then deceased champion jockey Bill Elliot, as a 14-year old boy c1942 for £15. Mrs Elliot advised him to take particular care as her late husband had used the saddle for all his races on Phar Lap, the most famous being the pair's last and greatest victory in the Agua Caliente Handicap in Mexico on 20th March 1932.]
The saddle has been on display at the Victorian Racing Museum at Caulfield, from it's official opening by the Queen in 1981 until recently. The saddle is accompanied by the catalogue of the opening of the Museum and the letter acknowledging the loan of this saddle and other pieces of racing memorabilia.
