Some soiling and creases evident, as to be expected; probably the only example extant from the Probation Station. Convicts letters are very scarce largely due to the low literacy among those sent to Van Diemen's Land and because the stigma associated with having a relative serving a sentance as a transported convict meant that those in England receiving letters from them were unlikely to retain them for future generations to learn of the blot on the family. This letter was written on 7th December 1846 by Gabriel Tinsley to his father from the Lymington Probation Station near Port Cygnet. Tinsley (his alias) was convicted in Lancashire of breaking & entering with intent to steal, arrived in the Colony on October 15, 1845 and sent to Lymington. Apart from a fine of 5/- for being drunk he had a clear record and was granted a conditional pardon in November 1853. Lymington Probation Station was a small station with an invalid hospital opened in 1845 and closed in 1848 serving invalid prisoners transferred from Impression Bay who were engaged in clearing and cultivating land. This is the only convict letter recorded from this short lived station and the earliest letter from the Huon region. It has been sent free in accordance with the Postal Regulations having been endorsed as required by the Superintendent of Convicts.  $2000 - $2500
