295   THE FIRST BALL IN AUSTRALIAN FIRST CLASS CRICKET: City of Melbourne Gas & Coke Company, one five pound share, dated 23rd Oct.1857, to William Henty of Hobart Town. [At the Launceston Racecourse (now the NTCA ground), at around eleven o'clock on 11 February 1851, William Henty bowled the first ball in Australian first-class cricket - to Duncan Cooper of Victoria. The ball was bowled underarm. Henty took match figures pf 9-78, including 5-26, the second five-wicket haul in Australian first-class cricket].  $400 - $500
296 L "Australian Cricketer's Guide for 1856-7" by H.Biers & W.Fairfax [Melbourne, 1857], the rarest and most highly prized of all Australian Cricket annuals, records the first inter-colonial match between New South Wales and Victoria. Only two have surfaced at auction in the last fifty years and those were without some advertising pages and wrappers (see "Wisden Book of Cricket Memorabilia" page 144). Good condition for its age with some minor faults and foxing. Bound and complete with both wrappers and 38 pages of advertisements. Only three known copies held privately worldwide. This is the only known complete copy. Superb early record of cricket in Australia.  $12500 - $15000

Records all the inter-colonial matches between NSW and Victoria up till 1860. Extremely scarce - none have appeared at auction in the last fifty years. [The second match of the tour, England took the honours against a Combined XI which included Bradman. Pataudi and Sutcliffe shared a second-wicket stand of 283, Sutcliffe going on to 169, Pataudi 129 with Jardine contributing 98 and Hammond 77 in an England total of 7 for 583 declared. The Combined XI followed on after scoring 159, Fingleton and Hill-Smith saving them from defeat. Bradman made only 3 and 10, and was clearly puzzled by Verity, who had 7 for 37 in the first innings].
